Philadelphia airport begins delivering food via robot

Philadelphia International Airport has a new, lean, mean food service machine.

The international airport began using a new Gita droid as part of a robotic food delivery pilot program effectuated on Monday.

“Now more than ever we are looking to be forward-thinking and innovative regarding our contactless ordering options,” Megan O’Connell, the airport’s food and shops marketing and customer service manager, said. “Gita allows our guests to customize their experience by choosing how much or how little human interaction they want when having their food delivered. We are thrilled to offer this feature as part of the seamless contactless ordering experience at PHL.”

The robot uses visual sensors to pair to and follow a representative of AtYourGate, a contactless airport food delivery service, through the airport.

The airport’s food and shops Twitter account posted video of the Gita robot in action after the program’s initiation.

While the pilot program has no set end date, O’Connell said the airport will review “feedback from customers and from the AtYourGate team members working with the Gita to better understand how we can utilize Gita in the future.”

Many businesses have adopted contactless modes of delivery amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Target created “Drive Up and Shipt” as a contactless means of delivery in time for Thanksgiving, and Starbucks began a contactless delivery service last April.
