I had the opportunity to speak with Congressman Eric Cantor yesterday evening, regarding the upcoming race in Virginia to succeed retiring Senator John Warner. Cantor stated that he’s hearing strong rumors that former Governor Mark Warner will declare for the seat next week. Given the proven ability of the Democrats to win statewide races in Virginia in recent years, and Warner’s popularity, many would regard him as the favorite on the day he declares. On the Republican side, there are two presumed contenders: former Governor Jim Gilmore — a conservative whose presidential campaign was a dud, and Congressman Tom Davis, a popular moderate from Northern Virginia. Cantor expressed real skepticism about Davis’s ability to win the race — asserting that he would probably fail to get the backing of pro-gun rights groups, anti-abortion groups, and groups that favor low taxes. Cantor also regards Gilmore as a weak candidate. When I pointed out that Virginia conservatives might be looking for another, more viable candidate, Cantor said ‘We hear you. We hear you,’ then walked away. Is Cantor considering a Senate run, or does he just know another strong viable conservative who’s likely to get in the race? It sounds like it must be one or the other.
