Trump testimony boosted by campaign omits Reagan tax criticism

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign promoted an excerpt of Trump at a congressional hearing, but left out the part where Trump rails against tax reform legislation signed by President Reagann.

Dan Scavino, Trump’s social media director, tweeted a video of Trump addressing members of the House Budget Committee in 1991. He included a caption with the video that noted when the budget committee needed an expert, they called Trump.

Shortly after the excerpt promoted by the Trump campaign ends, the billionaire urged Congress to raise taxes on high-income individuals, as first noted by Twitchy.

“Frankly, by having cut the high income tax rates to 25 percent, as an example, people don’t have the incentive any more to invest,” Trump said in video captured by C-SPAN. “But the fact is that 25 percent for high-income people, for high-income people, it should be raised substantially with the understanding that if you invest, you can get it down and down substantially below that number.”

Critics argued that some of the 1986 Tax Reform Act’s provisions were unfavorable to real estate, including changes to accelerated depreciation and limiting deductions on passive investment losses. Trump, a real estate developer, was among those critics.

Trump is pursuing the GOP presidential nomination with a slogan cribbed from Reagan.

Trump cast his ballot in the New York primary on Tuesday, where he is expected to win handily.
