Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw defended his weekend dig at the University of Alabama by saying it was just a “joke.”
Brokaw riled up the University of Alabama Saturday by implying at a University of Mississippi commencement address that students in Alabama were a little slower on the uptake.
“I said, ‘I’m so happy to be here because if I were speaking at Alabama, I’d have to use shorter words and shorter sentences,'” Brokaw explained on “Morning Joe.”
He said it got a “big reaction” and that his comments “went viral” in Alabama.
“Folks, it was a joke,” he explained. “Trust me. If I were speaking in Alabama, I would have used Florida State that way. So, c’mon, it was a joke.”
Brokaw’s original comments left some saying he should apologize, but he didn’t go that far on Tuesday, and left it by saying it was a joke.
