Brookside Gardens wins ‘green’ award

Brookside Gardens in Wheaton has been awarded one of Bethesda Magazine’s 2011 Green Champion Awards, given to leaders in the local fight to protect the environment.

Brookside Gardens won the award for a non-profit organization “that has significantly incorporated green-practices into their culture and operations.” Some of the greening efforts at the Montgomery County park include reducing water and pesticide runoff by installing permeable paving surrounding a large rain garden, using an efficient irrigation systems that reduces water consumption, and composting all green waste and reusing it as mulch.

“We have strong stewardship values, since we are entrusted with the care of that land for current and future generations,” said Brookside Gardens Director Stephanie Oberle.
