Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, is changing the legal team representing him in the special counsel’s investigation.
Manafort will now be represented by Miller & Chevalier, a law firm in Washington that specializes in financial crimes and foreign bribery cases, which has represented him in legal cases in the past.
“Mr. Manafort is in the process of retaining his former counsel, Miller & Chevalier, to represent him in the office of special counsel investigation. As of today, WilmerHale no longer represents Mr. Manafort,” Jason Maloni, a Manafort spokesperson, said in a statement.
According to Politico, Kevin Downing, a former senior Justice Department official known for his work representing clients and firms facing financial investigations, will be working on the case for Miller & Chevalier.
Manafort has become a central figure in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, which along with a number of congressional panels, is looking into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
News outlets on Wednesday reported the FBI raided Manafort’s Alexandria, Va., home July 26 after obtaining a search warrant for tax documents and foreign banking records, one day after Manafort testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that Mueller and his investigators have issued subpoenas to global banks for records of transactions and account information involving Manafort.
Manafort resigned as Trump’s campaign manager last August while concerns mounted over his past work for a pro-Russian party in Ukraine.
