Firefighter injured while battling three-alarm fire in Suitland

A firefighter was injured at a three-alarm fire at an apartment building in Prince George’s County early Wednesday morning, officials said.

Firefighters were notified of the fire about 6:30 a.m., according to Prince George’s County Fire/EMS. When they arrived at 5621 Regency Park Court in Suitland, firefighters saw heavy smoke at the rear side of the building. Firefighters on the first arriving ladder truck rescued four family members from a top floor balcony.

Ninety firefighters and medics came to the scene, and it took 45 minutes to bring the fire under control, officials said. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

Officials believe the fire started in a front terrace-level apartment and spread through the upper floors and into the roof structure. The fire’s cause is under investigation.

Damage has been preliminarily estimated at $250,000. Officials said 14 apartment units have been declared uninhabitable, and 31 residents were displaced.
