Drunken driver kills passenger after going airborne and crashing into dealership

A passenger in the car of a Florida drunken driver died after the driver crashed while attempting to flee from police.

Jennifer Carvajal, 24, was speeding on Interstate Highway 4 near Mango Road early Sunday morning when an officer clocked the vehicle traveling at 111 miles per hour with three others in the car, according to Fox13. An officer clocked her going that speed three times, according to the police report from Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which was obtained by the Washington Examiner.

When the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, Carvajal veered off the road without slowing down. The car went airborne after hitting an embankment parallel to the highway and traveled over a Department of Transportation fence before the vehicle “collided with a Ford F-250 pickup truck parked at Gator Ford. Still in motion, the vehicle struck a concrete light pole and a palm tree before finally overturning at final rest in the parking lot,” according to the police report.

The police said Carvajal, who was on probation for a previous DUI manslaughter conviction, was the only person in the car who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She suffered minor injuries. The other three people in the vehicle included a 19-year-old, who was in the front seat but then was thrown into the back seats during the crash, and a 20-year-old and a 22-year-old, who were both ejected from the vehicle. The elder of the two died because of injuries.

The 24-year-old faces a litany of charges, including driving under the influence, reckless driving, multiple counts of DUI property damage, driving without a license, and DUI manslaughter.

Carvajal was convicted of DUI manslaughter in 2014 after her vehicle collided with another, driven by Keith Allen Davis, and he died.
