Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she does not have a relationship with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and that the California lawmaker is attempting to sidetrack her by making her busy with committee assignments.
“I think sometimes people think that we have a relationship,” the New York Democrat said in an interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour. “Not particularly,” the freshman representative added when asked if the two had a relationship.
“The last time I kind of spoke to her one on one was when she asked me to join the Select Committee on Climate Change,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I was assigned to some of the busiest committees and four subcommittees. So my hands are full. And sometimes I wonder if they’re trying to keep me busy.”
Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez have feuded in the last week with the San Francisco congresswoman saying the 29-year-old lawmaker and her fellow progressive congresswoman were just “four people.”
“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” Pelosi said. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”
Ocasio-Cortez responded saying Pelosi was ignoring “public sentiment.”
“That public ‘whatever’ is called public sentiment. And wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country,” the New York Democrat said. “I find it strange when members act as though social media isn’t important. They set millions of dollars on fire to run TV ads so people can see their message. I haven’t dialed for dollars *once* this year, & have more time to do my actual job. Yet we’d rather campaign like it’s 2008.”
