Former President Barack Obama on Monday began his first public remarks since leaving office with a joke.
“So uh, what’s been going on while I’ve been gone?”

Obama’s most prominent post-presidency sightings have been while on vacation, though he has issued the rare statement about President Trump, including saying he was “heartened” by the protests in reaction to his first travel ban executive order and calling Trump’s wiretap accusations “simply false.”
Later during Monday’s remarks, Obama lamented the media landscape that lets people reinforce “their own realities.”
