Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham defended the president after many Democrats have accused his rhetoric of being at least partly responsible for the recent mass shooting in El Paso, Texas.
Graham said members of Congress are trying to find bipartisan solutions to ending mass shootings by talking with gun groups, police, and the White House.
“We’re trying to come up with a serious solution to a serious problem. We are trying to empower police officers to do something before it is too late with plenty of due process. We are not trying to take anybody’s guns away from them. We are trying to get the guns out of the hands of people who are dangerous who may kill themselves or somebody else,” Graham told Fox News.
“And for the last 24 hours it’s been pretty disappointing to hear all the rhetoric directed at President Trump. President Trump is not the problem here. The Congress has been talking and it’s time to act,” he added.
Many of the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates said over the weekend that Trump has created an environment conducive to racism. In a screed that was allegedly written by the shooter, he describes his hatred for Hispanics and said he wanted to stop the “Hispanic invasion of Texas.” He added his beliefs “predate Trump and his campaign.”
