White House tells GOP lawmakers to say ‘the president was entirely correct’ about Charlottesville

The White House said President Trump “has been a voice for unity and calm” following the deadly protests in Charlottesville and subsequent controversy over his statements Tuesday.

In a talking points memo to congressional Republicans, the White House also said: “The president was entirely correct — both sides of the violence in Charlottesville acted inappropriately, and bear some responsibility.”

Trump gave a tumultuous news conference at Trump Tower on Tuesday afternoon where he defended his decision to wait two days to denounce the white supremacist groups at the Charlottesville protest, which resulted in the death of a counter-protester and injured many others because he didn’t have “the facts.”

He also blamed both sides for what happened.

The White House reiterated his remarks against the media, saying his remarks condemning white supremacist Monday “will never be enough” for the media.

Numerous Republican congressmen, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, have denounced his remarks. At least two Democratic lawmakers have called for his impeachment.
