After a plywood wall was put up to protect Portland City Hall, city officials were quick to change their minds and urged it to come down.
The city initially ordered the wall to be propped up to protect the building vandalized by protesters. The building had been vandalized every night since protests began two weeks ago following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. City officials say cleaning graffiti off the building is time-consuming and expensive.
FOX 12 of Portland reports that city officials backtracked their stance and said they needed to put their relationship with its community first.
“Building a wall and in this country right now, and after the past four years, we’ve been preoccupied with building walls, and I think more walls need to come down than be put up,” Portland resident Jeff Henderson said.
The total cost of the plywood enclosure is around $30,000, according to city officials.
