Statewide unemployment rose to 4.6 percent last month, up from 4.5 percent in August and 3.6 percent a year ago, according to federal data released Tuesday.
The number of unemployed persons rose slightly to 138,800 from 136,300 in August and 108,300 a year ago, according to the labor department data.
The national rate held in September at 6.1 percent, while 47 states reported increases in unemployment, led by Rhode Island at 8.8 percent and Michigan at 8.7 percent.
