Ward 8 D.C. Councilman Marion Barry’s annual turkey giveaway has some conditions attached to it this year, so listen up parents: Start paying attention to your children at least until Nov. 22, the date of the schedulde giveaway.
According to Barry’s flier, parents with school-aged kids “must attend every parent/teacher conference from October through November 2011.” They must also attend every PTA meeting during the same time period and sign a PASSport to Success contract (a parent training program). You’ve also got to be able to prove your Ward 8 residency and show how many children you have (alert, Donald Trump: Birth certificates may be required).
If you don’t have children, your path to free turkey-dom is a bit easier. The requirements for those residents is proof of residency status, proof that you are a registered voter and you must attend at least three community meetings on a pre-approved list. The list is handed out after you pre-register.
Oh yeah, residents also have to sign up this year. But other than that, it’s a breeze, right?
The giveaway will donate 2,000 turkeys to residents. Registration will be held Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Campbell AME Church on MLK Jr. Avenue in Southeast.
