U.N. cancels aid to Syria after strike

The United Nations is halting aid to Syria after its deadly attack in Aleppo against a convoy of aid trucks and a warehouse containing essential supplies meant for those affected by the country’s civil war.

“At the moment [the] aid operation remains suspended while we assess and re-evaluate the situation on the ground,” a UN spokesperson told CNN.

The UN reported that a convoy of 31 trucks with food and medical supplies for about 78,000 people were attacked, and 18 were hit by assailants.

Organization officials said they were “outraged” and “disgusted” by the incident. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, twenty people involved in the mission were killed.

CNN reported it is neither clear who committed the assault nor whether the trucks were targeted by air or shelled.

Late Monday, the U.S. State Department said it was “outraged” by the attack, and said it would raise the issue with Russia. The U.S. has been prodding Russia for months now to reduce violence in Syria, but to no avail.
