On GW’s birthday, another Republican jumps into Va. Senate race

David McCormick, a Hampton Roads attorney, on Tuesday became the third Republican to enter the 2012 race for Senate in Virginia – not-so-subtly choosing George Washington’s birthday to state his intentions.

In his announcement video, McCormick criticizes what he calls ineffective, and, in many cases, “immoral” leadership coming from Washington.

Perhaps anticipating a characterization as an underdog in the race, he noted that the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” when the U.S. Olympic hockey team upset the Russians also happened on George Washington’s birthday.

“I believe it’s time for Virginia to elect a new leader in the Senate who will have no other agenda than to serve our great country and to get America back on the right track,” McCormick said in his video message announcing his candidacy. “It’s time for a new Senator that will represent Virginians again, and put its citizens first.”

Former Sen. George Allen and Jamie Radtke are the only other two Republicans who have officially announced their runs, and Democrats are still waiting for former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine to make his decision on whether to jump into the race.
