ABC Democratic debate moderator Jorge Ramos tells Latino audience: ‘This is our country too’

Jorge Ramos, an anchor for Univision and a moderator of Wednesday’s Democratic debate in Houston, welcomed the Spanish-speaking audience saying, “Despite the fact that we are facing difficult times, this is our country too.”

The anchor, known for his advocacy for migrants rights at the U.S. southern border, opened the night saying, “We appreciate the opportunity to welcome Latinos across the country and to ask about Latino issues during these challenging times.”

Ramos also moderated a Democratic primary debate in 2016, when he disclosed that his daughter Paola was a Clinton staffer, but he pledged to remain unbiased throughout the election.

Ramos, however, during the Republican presidential primary election cycle, found himself going head-to-head with then-candidate Donald Trump.

At an event in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2015, he asked Trump a question without being called on, and Trump told Ramos to “sit down” and “go back to Univision.” The Univision anchor was thrown out of the event.

In 2018, Ramos, when asked about his biased political activism in relation to his coverage of Trump, replied, “Am I supposed to be neutral when the president of the United States makes racist remarks? When he says that Mexican immigrants are criminals and rapists, or when he says that Judge Gonzalo Curiel cannot do his job, simply because of his Mexican heritage?”
