Leading up to Roy Moore’s defeat of Sen. Luther Strange in a primary runoff contest Tuesday night, supporters in Moore Headquarters in Montgomery, Ala., began to celebrate as Moore obtained a hefty lead, effectively securing a win.
After the Associated Press projected Moore to be the victor and it was announced that Moore would soon be taking the stage, applause broke out, according to NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard. Within moments, Strange conceded the contest.
Moore was previously the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and faced a primary runoff election with Strange to fill Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Senate seat.
President Trump endorsed Strange, who was viewed as part of the Republican “establishment” and had also received support from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
