Presidential race narrows to tie in Ohio: Poll

The presidential race between Joe Biden and President Trump has narrowed to a tie in Ohio, according to the latest poll in the battleground state.

In most polling up until this point in the state, Biden has maintained a lead over Trump. But now, it appears the race may end up being quite a close contest.

A CBS/YouGov poll conducted between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2 surveyed 1,128 registered voters. Both Biden and Trump received 47% of support from those respondents. Five percent of those interviewed said they weren’t sure who they would vote for, and 2% of respondents said they would vote for someone else.

The poll carried with it a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

A poll from Fox News, which wrapped up on Sept. 23, showed Biden with a 5-point lead. A poll from Quinnipiac, which concluded on Sept. 21, showed the Democrat only 1 point ahead.

The last CBS/YouGov poll conducted in the state, which happened in July, placed Trump 1 point ahead of Biden.

The most recent poll was conducted online, a format not generally favored by polling experts. However, YouGov fairs better than most other online pollsters, scoring a B in FiveThirtyEight’s grading system, a better grade than most of YouGov’s online competitors.

While in 2016 the polling results in Ohio were a bit scattered, in the end, Trump secured the state by just over 8 percentage points.

Not much polling has been conducted in the Buckeye State so far in the 2020 cycle. As more surveys take place there, a fuller picture of the race may become clear.

Early on Friday morning, the White House announced that Trump had tested positive for COVID-19, bringing his public campaign appearances to an abrupt halt. There are roughly 30 days until the election.

The results of another poll, released by NBC and the Wall Street Journal on Saturday, showed Biden with a 14-point lead on the national level following the first debate.
