Trump and Emmanuel Macron coordinating response to Syria chemical weapons attack

President Trump and President Emmanuel Macron of France spoke Monday to “continue their coordination” for a response to the chemical attacks against civilians in Syria over the weekend, according to the White House.

The announcement from the White House came shortly after Trump said he would determine how the U.S. would respond to the “heinous” chemical attack in the near future.

“We’re going to make a decision tonight or shortly thereafter,” Trump said. “We can’t let that happen in our world, especially when we’re able to — because of the power of the United States — we’re able to stop it.”

The comments came after it was reported Syrian President Bashar Assad allegedly carried out a chemical weapons attack that killed more than 40 people.

In response to a chemical weapons attack on civilians in April 2017, Trump ordered a retaliatory missile strike on a Syrian air base.

Amid tense relations with Russia, Trump has also warned that leaders of Syria, Russia, and Iran would face consequences if it was revealed they were behind the attack.

“President Putin, Russia, and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad. Big price to pay,” Trump tweeted on Sunday.
