WATCH: Florida couple discovers five pearls in oyster meal

A Florida couple made a surprise discovery Friday when they found at least five rare pearls inside the oysters they were eating.

Anja Kellenberger said she and her fiance, Rod Balmer, were not expecting the discovery.

“We were sitting out on our pool deck, and we were just having an afternoon, you know, I think, a glass of wine and some oysters,” Kellenberger said.

Balmer then bit into an oyster and knew something was different, he said.

“I thought it was something from the shell initially, but then, when I got the first one out, and then, the second one spoke, you know, and the third, fourth, fifth — it kind of felt the same way. So, I knew that they were pearls. That was kind of really freaky,” according to Balmer.

In total, the oysters from Merrick Seafood Market in Cape Coral, Florida, gifted the couple at least five pearls.

“We do see them over the years, just not that many all at once,” Kerry Kreig, the owner and chef at Merrick Seafood Market, said. “So, should be a blessing for them.”

The occasion is quite rare, given that only 1 in 10,000 wild oysters will develop a pearl, according to a report.

“Yeah, you can say we’re two pearls in an oyster!” Kellenberger said.
