In an NBC interview that aired today, Anita Hill implied she would support Joe Biden for president should he become the eventual Democratic nominee. Hill has previously been outspoken about her disappointment in the former vice president’s role as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee in her contentious hearings over accusations of sexual harassment against Clarence Thomas in 1991.
After several questions relating to the personal hardship Hill endured during and after the hearings, host Andrea Mitchell asked, “Could you conceive of voting for Joe Biden if he turns out to be the Democratic nominee against Donald Trump?”
Hill quickly responded, “Of course, I could.”
In April, Hill told the New York Times that Biden had called her ahead of his presidential campaign announcement to apologize for what she went through during the hearings. In an interview after Biden’s phone call, she told the Times, “I hold him responsible certainly for what happened in 1991, and to the extent that many of the same things that happened in 1991 followed in 2018, there is a connection.” When asked directly about Biden’s apology, Hill declined to categorize his comments to her as an apology, saying, “Sen. Biden and I have had a conversation, and I think he said to me exactly what he has said to the American public.”
In an appearance on “The View” Following Hill’s comments to the New York Times, Biden said of the 1991 hearings, “I don’t think I treated her badly.”
