Police to target drunk drivers during Super Bowl

Area police are stepping up patrols Sunday to target drunk drivers during and after the Super Bowl.

Both Maryland State Police and Virginia State Police say extra officers will be on the highways as the Pittsburgh Steelers face off against the Green Bay Packers.

In Northern Virginia, there will be an increased police presence from 8 p.m. Sunday until 4 a.m. Monday.

Maryland State Police say additional officers from all 22 barracks will be deployed specifically to target drunk drivers.

“We want people to enjoy themselves, but not at the expense of hurting or killing others by getting behind the wheel and driving drunk,” 1st Sgt. Eric Penree said in a Virginia State Police statement.

Police say people attending or hosting Super Bowl parties should designate sober drivers in advance, have phone numbers for cab companies, alternate drinks with food and non-alcoholic beverages and take keys away from anyone thinking about driving intoxicated.
