‘God-fearing, country-loving’: Trump plans to attend Daytona 500

President Trump is expected to attend the Daytona 500, the official opening of the 2020 NASCAR season.

The race is scheduled to take place on Sunday. Trump plans to drop in on the sporting event on his way back to Washington after spending the weekend at Mar-a-Lago, his Miami resort, according to Politico.

Trump is using the event to excite his supporters.

“It’s the base,” a Trump campaign adviser said. “God-fearing, country-loving Americans.”

During his 2016 presidential run, Trump secured the endorsements of a handful of NASCAR’s biggest stars. Former NASCAR CEO Brian France and Hall of Famer Bill Elliott endorsed Trump. Drivers Chase Elliott, Ryan Newman, and David Ragan also backed the president.

Trump honored 2018 NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano at the White House last year, praising the athlete and the sport in general. The president said he watches NASCAR “all the time.”

“You never forget what matters most,” Trump added. “God, family, and country.”

Trump has made several other appearances at sports events recently. Trump attended Game 5 of the World Series at Nationals Park in Washington in October. Fans at the event booed his appearance. Trump and first lady Melania Trump also attended the College Football Playoff game in January, where the crowd greeted them with chants of “USA.”
