Male, blue-collar workers aged 25-54 most at risk to be replaced by robots

A new book The Future of Work predicts men between the ages of 25 and 54 years old who work blue-collar jobs will be the first group of people to be replaced by robots.

One third of this group of men could get pink-slipped by 2050 because machines will replace many of those jobs, while careers that require advanced education and more skill are the safest professions, according to a book excerpt Daily Mail published Tuesday.

Author Darrell M. West claimed lay-offs will be even worse for young black men, 50 percent of whom could be forced out of work by the emergence of robots.

“Workers will need help throughout their lifetimes to acquire new skills and develop new job capabilities. Political reforms will be necessary to reduce polarization and restore civility so there can be open and healthy debate about where responsibility lies for economic well-being,” West wrote in a summary.

The effect of intelligent machines moving into workplaces would be “catastrophic” on American workers as they try to find new jobs in an evolving workforce, he said.
