Katie Couric defended her decision to edit out remarks by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg during Couric’s Tuesday appearance on the Today Show.
Couric appeared on the Today Show to promote her new book, Going There, set to be released on Oct. 26. When asked about the decision to edit Ginsburg’s remarks about Colin Kaepernick, the former anchor said it was typical for the industry.
“I think what people don’t realize is we make editorial decisions like that all the time,” she replied.

Couric claimed that she did not understand Ginsburg’s comments calling Kaepernick’s act of protest “contempt for a government that has made it possible for their parents and grandparents to live a decent life.” The former anchor said Ginsburg’s comments were “subject to interpretation.”
Looking back, Couric said that she wished she had run the statement or asked Ginsburg to clarify the remarks at a later point.
Couric also commented on her former co-host, Matt Lauer, whom several former employees accused of sexual harassment in 2017. Couric had previously defended Lauer, describing him as a “decent man.” In her Today appearance, Couric said that it took her a long time to process the allegations against Lauer.
The Lauer she knew was “kind, generous, considerate, a good colleague.” Couric said that as she looked into the allegations, what she found was “devastating” and “disgusting.”

Couric said that she did nothing about the alleged sexual misconduct because “no one came to talk to me about it.” She also claims that she no longer has a relationship with Lauer.
In previously leaked parts of Couric’s book, the former anchor said that she had heard rumors of Lauer’s sexual endeavors but that Lauer “ultimately turned out to be two very different people, in terms of my relationship with him versus some of the other things that were going on.”
In 2012, Couric mentioned in an interview that Lauer “pinches [her] on the a** a lot.”
