Three dead, nine injured in shooting at Halloween party

Three people are dead and nine more are injured after late-night shooting at a Halloween party in Long Beach, California.

Long Beach Police public information officer Jennifer De Prez told NBC News that officers responded to an active scene shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday night. She said the shooting is still being investigated and no suspect information is immediately available.

“We don’t know if there is just one suspect or multiple. That’s part of the ongoing investigation,” De Prez told reporters at the scene of the incident.

Many of those who were shot are believed to be in their mid-20s. Of the nine who were wounded, five were considered “immediate,” meaning they may have sustained life-threatening injuries.

Long Beach Fire Department public information officer Jake Heflin said that it appeared as though the shooting occurred at a house party at or around a residence.

“It looks like it was a party, some type of a Halloween-type costume party, and that seems to be where the shooting occurred,” Helfin said. “Obviously, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families that have been impacted by this tragic event.”

A man who was walking in the area around the time of the mass shooting said he heard about 20 shots ring out and began running.

“It didn’t seem real. I thought I was dreaming,” he said. “It was continuous shots.”
