Minnesota Department of Corrections releases booking photo of Chauvin post-trial

The Minnesota Department of Corrections released a booking photo of Derek Chauvin on Wednesday following the verdict in which the former Minneapolis Police Department officer was found guilty on all charges he was facing.

Chauvin, 45, was found guilty on Tuesday by a jury on charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter for his role in the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020.

He was transferred to the maximum security Minnesota Correctional Facility at Oak Park Heights when he was remanded.

The former police officer faces up to 40 years in prison, and his sentencing hearing will take place in eight weeks.

Following Floyd’s death, protests, demonstrations, and rioting took place nationwide, with Minneapolis serving as the epicenter of extreme demonstrations that resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

Outrage over the incident stemmed from a nearly nine-minute video in which Chauvin can be seen placing his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes while the man, lying on the ground, called for his mother and yelled, “I can’t breathe,” multiple times. Floyd was taken to a medical facility, where he was pronounced dead following the arrest.

Chauvin’s attorney, Eric Nelson, said Floyd’s death was due to a toxic combination of fentanyl and a preexisting heart condition.

Prosecutors called in dozens of witnesses who said they had never seen an officer behave like Chauvin before. The Minneapolis police chief also said his officers are never taught the kind of restraint Chauvin used and that the incident, caught on tape, appeared to be murder.
