Louisiana mother shoots home invader dead to protect children

A suspected home invader in Louisiana died Sunday after he was fatally shot by a mother protecting her two young children, authorities said.

The incident occurred at a house in Hammond, Louisiana, around 5:00 a.m., according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Suspected home invader Robert Rheams, 51, had reportedly forced his way into the home armed with a lug wrench and shovel when he came face-to-face with the mother protecting her two children, the sheriff’s office said.

A struggle erupted between Rheams and the mother, the homeowner, which came to an end when the mother shot the alleged invader.

Authorities soon arrived, and the local parish coroner declared Rheams dead, according to a report.

The mother is not reportedly facing any charges, and Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Jimmy Travis said she appeared to have lawfully exercised her Second Amendment right to defend her home and children.

Prior to the suspected invasion, Rheams had been released on parole following a 20-year stint in prison for armed robbery.
