Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin praised her former running mate, Sen. John McCain, on Saturday following his death, saying the country lost an “American original” and heralding McCain for inspiring others.

“Sen. John McCain was a maverick and a fighter, never afraid to stand for his beliefs,” Palin, a Republican, said in a statement. “John never took the easy path in life—and through sacrifice and suffering he inspired others to serve something greater than self. John McCain was my friend. I will remember the good times.”
