Matt Gaetz says Mueller testimony will help reelect Trump

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz thinks former special counsel Robert Mueller’s upcoming testimony about the Russia investigation will help President Trump more than harm him.

“We are going to reelect the president,” the Florida lawmaker told the New York Times.

Mueller is set to answer questions from the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees on Wednesday about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether President Trump obstructed justice.

He concluded in his 448-page report there was insufficient evidence to establish the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to win the election. However, he did not make a determination on whether the president obstructed justice, citing Justice Department guidelines against indicting a sitting president.

Trump and his allies have claimed the report exonerates the president, but the special counsel said in May that is not that case.

“If we had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said that,” Mueller said.
