Maryland voter turnout lowest on record

Voter turnout in Maryland’s primary election held Tuesday was the lowest since 1984, the first year for which the Maryland State Board of Elections has data.

Less than 21 percent of the state’s 3.2 million registered voters cast ballots, either by voting early or on Election Day. In the Washington-area suburbs, that number drops further, to 14.2 percent in Montgomery County and 14.5 percent in Prince George’s County, according to the Board of Elections.

The previous low was in the 1996 primary election, when 25 percent of the 2.3 million registered voters turned out.
