Hackers recently stole personal information from T-Mobile customers, including billing zip codes, account numbers and email addresses, the company said in a statement.
“On August 20, our cybersecurity team discovered and shut down an unauthorized access to certain information,” T-Mobile said. “We take the security of your information very seriously and have a number of safeguards in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access.”
No financial data or social security numbers were stolen, the Bellevue, Wash.-based telecommunications firm said. A T-Mobile spokesperson said there is no additional threat from the breach.
T-Mobile said it informed authorities of the hacking that affected up to 3 percent of the firm’s 77 million customers, which is about 2.3 million.
The company spokesperson did not immediately respond to an emailed inquiry about the entity or individual behind the security breach.
