Md. resident arrested for recording police activities

Another Maryland resident has been arrested for recording police activities.

St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputies were responding to a noise complaint at a Lexington Park neighborhood when they arrested Yvonne Nicole Shaw, 27, on charges that she violated Maryland wiretapping laws.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Patrick Handy said on the night of the arrest, he was talking to neighborhood residents and spotted Shaw standing 12 feet away holding her cell phone “in a manner suggesting she was recording our activity.”

“She did admit to recording our encounter on her cell phone … for the purpose of trying to show the police are harassing people,” Handy wrote in a statement of probable cause.

Shaw faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine if she is convicted.

In March, 25-year-old Anthony Graber of Abingdon was pulled over for speeding on his motorcycle, and a camera he used to record his rides caught the ticketing officer on camera.

Graber later posted the video recording on YouTube.

In April, Graber was charged with violating the state’s wiretapping laws, which make recording a conversation illegal unless all parties consent.

Graber, a staff sargeant for the Maryland Air National Guard, spent 26 hours in jail and faces up to 16 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
