The Florida House of Representatives struck down a motion to consider a bill to ban assault rifles, a defeat that followed last week’s shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla.
The state House voted down the motion, 36-71.
When the state legislature convened Tuesday, Rep. Kionne McGhee, a Democrat, asked for the procedural motion. If passed, the House would’ve considered the ban on assault rifles, as well as a ban on large capacity magazines.
Three committees were assigned to hear the bill, but hadn’t scheduled hearings, according to the Associated Press.
The legislative session ends March 9, making it unlikely the bill will move forward.
According to the Associated Press, students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were in the gallery of the state House of Representatives when the motion was voted down.
Seventeen people died, and several were injured when 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fired at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week.
Cruz allegedly used an AR-15 in the shooting.
