Western Howard County Democrats, hide your political ambitions no longer ? a new Democrat club is coming to you.
“We?re gaining ground there. We want to try to establish a Democratic presence there,” said Tony McGuffin, chairman of the Howard County Democratic Central Committee, who plans to lead the club in the Republican-dominated portion of the county.
“There is some growth in that part of the county; we want to take advantage of that, and get the Democratic message out there.”
Of Howard County?s six voting precincts, only two in the Western part of the county have a Republican majority: Precinct 3, which covers the Northwestern areas of Marriottsville, West Friendship and Ellicott City; and Precinct 4, which covers Western areas of Marriottsville, Lisbon and Glenelg.
A leader in the club will be Don Dunn, a Democrat who is running for the traditionally Republican District 5 County Council seat, now held by Republican Charles Feaga.
Dunn said he hopes the club will help him and other Democrats increase their odds of getting elected.
“It?s a Democratic wasteland out here. You?ve got to start somewhere,” he said.
“I thought that by having a club, we would be finding other talent out here that could run for the other offices. We could give them a good run. It?s probably time for a change in philosophy out here.”
