Ex-Va. cop sentenced for producing child porn

A former Virginia police officer was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for producing child pornography.

William Hurlbut, of Fredericksburg, was sentenced Friday in federal court in Alexandria to 20 years and 10 months in prison. Prosecutors said Hurlbut, 29, is a former police officer in Aquia Harbour, a town in Stafford County.

Hurlbut pleaded guilty in June.

In 2009, Hurlbut performed sex acts on an 8-year-old boy who was sleeping and filmed them with his iPhone, according to court documents. Authorities found more than 2,000 images and video of child pornography on his computers and other digital devices, the documents say.

Hurlbut had known the victim since the boy was six months old, authorities said.

“Mr. Hurlbut is a child predator who befriended the victim’s family and groomed the young child for years leading up to the assault,” Neil MacBride, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said in a statement.
