Responding to presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders coming out against police use of facial recognition software, Rep. Rashida Tlaib likewise called for the Detroit Police Department not to use the cutting-edge technology.
“You should probably rethink this whole facial recognition bulls–t,” the Michigan Democrat tweeted on Monday.

“Before you criticize the software, come to our Real Time Crime Center to see how we @detroitpolice responsibly use it in efforts to identify criminals involved in violent crimes,” the department responded, asking for a time to schedule a visit.

Tlaib said she would agree to a visit, and “I would ask that you please review the 2 @OversightDems hearings…on facial recognition & see the indisputable data that it’s flawed. Residents are very concerned.”

I would ask that you please review the 2 @OversightDems hearings (Part I & II: https://t.co/VhCYvPajXe ) on facial recognition & see the indisputable data that it’s flawed. Residents are very concerned. I can share what I’ve found during the visit. https://t.co/M2ax88LGyF

In the Vice News article Tlaib referenced, a spokesperson for the Sanders campaign said he is going to advocate for a national ban on facial recognition that can be enforced on a state and local level.
In Sanders’ overall criminal justice reform platform, he is also calling for a ban on private prisons, an end to cash bail, and a ban on the death penalty.
