John Kasich: No plans to form unity ticket to challenge Trump

Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Friday he has no plans to form a unity ticket with Gov. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., and challenge President Trump in 2020.

According to multiple reports, the two “casually discussed” the idea of running as independents with Kasich at the top of the ticket. But a spokesperson for Kasich said he currently has no plans beyond serving as Ohio’s governor.

“The only plans we currently have is for the governor to speak out and lead on the important issues of the day, just as he has and is doing on healthcare. Nothing beyond that,” a spokesperson for Kasich said Friday.

Hickenlooper has also shot down chatter that the two are considering teaming up.

“I don’t think Kasich would ever do that. … I don’t think it’s in the cards. But I do like the idea of working with him in some context at some point,” Hickenlooper told Politico earlier this month.

The pair recently formed a seemingly rare bipartisan alliance, appearing together and tackling major policy issues such as immigration and healthcare.

“The idea of a joint ticket has been discussed, but not at an organizational or planning level,” a source told CNN. “What they are trying to show the country is that honorable people can disagree, but you can still problem solve together. It happens in businesses and it happens in families. Why can’t it happen in Washington?”
