A man is being heralded as a hero after he rescued a small dog that almost died in an elevator accident.
“Y’all I’m shaking!!! I just saved a dog on a leash that didn’t make it onto the elevator with the owner before the door closed! I just happened to turn around as the door closed and it started to lift off the ground I got the leash off in time,” Johnny Mathis said Tuesday on Twitter.
Mathis added a video of security tape showing the rescue in his Houston apartment building. It appears the Pomeranian would have choked to death against the elevator as its leash was pulling away if Mathis had not intervened.

“She started screaming as soon as the door shut and was bawling her eyes out when it came back down, she thought the worst,” Mathis said about the owner.

Mathis told Fox 10 on Tuesday that the moment was terrifying but “all I was focused on was getting that leash off the dog.” He said he did not blame the owner who was “new to the building” and did expect the door to shut so fast.
“There was nothing she could have done,” Mathis said. “I felt terrible for her. It was a honest mistake.”
