Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., celebrated the end of a “long and tough” election year in his opening Senate floor remarks on Tuesday.
“I think everyone is glad it’s over,” McConnell said. “I think America is ready to come together and move the country forward.”
Not an initial fan of Donald Trump, McConnell said he now speaks regularly to the president-elect, who he congratulated in his speech.
“Speaker Ryan and I had productive discussions with the president-elect last week and we are looking forward to working with him,” McConnell said.
McConnell referred to President Obama’s press conference Monday and said “we are all rooting for the president elect’s success in uniting the country.”
