Marylanders warned of unclaimed property scam

Maryland residents are warned to avoid an unclaimed property scandal resulting in fraudulent charges to people’s phone bills.

The Maryland Comptroller’s Office issued a warning Thursday about residents receiving phony emails from the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.

The message says an abandoned package belonging to the person has been found, and directs people to call an international number, which is charged to their phone bill.

“My office works closely with the NAUPA but that organization never notifies owners of unclaimed or missing funds,” said Comptroller Peter Franchot. “If any Marylander receives this message, please notify my office immediately.”

Anyone who receive the phony message should call the comptroller’s office at (410) 767-1700, or toll-free at (800) 782-7383.
