Safety upgrades for Memorial Bridge, George Washington Parkway due by this fall

Safety improvements are being made on the George Washington Mermorial Parkway and Memorial Bridge following residents complaints about numerous accidents involving cars, cyclists and pedestrians.

Improvements announced Thursday by Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., U.S. Park Police and the National Park Service include:

  • new directional signs in the Circle and on Memorial Bridge;
  • rumble strips to alert drivers of crosswalks;
  • newly painted directional arrows and other indicators to help drivers select the proper lane earlier;
  • relocation of a crosswalk to a narrower part of the road.

“The health and safety of those commuting to work or simply exercising along the Potomac River should never be threatened due to poor infrastructure planning,” Moran said in a statement.

The National Park Service befan work on the improvements this week and expects to finish by the fall.
