Romney undecided on holding Supreme Court confirmation vote this year

Sen. Mitt Romney said Monday he has not decided whether he would support confirming a Supreme Court nominee before the November election.

Romney, a Utah Republican and frequent critic of President Trump, told reporters outside the Senate chamber that he’ll confer with fellow Republicans Tuesday at a closed-door lunch.

“Until then, I’m going to be waiting to get a chance to speak to those colleagues,” Romney said.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said the Senate will vote this year on a nominee. He told reporters late Monday, “We’re going to move ahead with the nomination.”

The GOP controls 53 votes and can only lose three Republicans in the effort to confirm a nominee. So far, Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine appear ready to oppose a nominee, arguing it’s too close to an election and that voters should have a say on Nov. 3.

Many consider Romney the third possible defector.
