A top CNN political commentator suggested early results from the Super Tuesday Democratic primaries could spell trouble for socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Van Jones said Sanders’s plan to win big in Texas and California could be derailed by a late surge from former Vice President Joe Biden, who picked up major endorsements from Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke on the night before voters in 14 states and American Samoa cast their ballots.
“Those numbers are very, very disturbing,” Jones said during the network’s election night coverage. “If you’re a part of the Sanders team, you’ve been saying, ‘Hey listen, fine, take Alabama, great, that’s the Deep South, but wait ’til you get to Texas, wait ’til you get to our stronghold, our firewall will be Texas and California.’ Those numbers for Sanders do not look good in Texas.”
The panel urged caution as only 6% of the vote has been counted in Texas, with Biden ahead by less than 1%. However, the former vice president dominated Sanders in Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama, leading to speculation that the Vermont senator may not win a majority of delegates to secure the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in July.
