Update: Secret Service says fence jumper a robbery suspect

The Secret Service said Tuesday evening that the man who tried to jump the White House fence was a possible suspect in a nearby robbery.

The incident at the Old Executive Office Building prompted a temporary lockdown, during with the man was arrested.

“The individual was subsequently taken into custody by Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers without incident,” the Secret Service said. “Initial investigation indicates the individual was fleeing from the scene of a robbery that occurred near the area of G Street and 17th Street N.W.”

The suspect may have also been injured during his attempt to hop the fence. A White House correspondent reported overhearing a Secret Service officer request a stretcher for the unidentified jumper, and reported that the person was “in a moat,” which is the shallow ditch surrounding the White House.

Early reports said tourists were being rerouted as authorities were investigating, but the lockdown ended shortly after it began.
