Saturday and Sunday: Washington Wine Academy’s 1K Wine Walk
If the idea of a wine 1K walk makes you laugh, well, that’s what Jim Barker wanted.
“That’s exactly my intention,” said Barker, founder and president of the Washington Wine Academy and the mastermind behind combining a short-distance walk with wine tasting. “It spurs interest.”
This weekend, the Washington Wine Academy presents its first-ever 1K Wine Walk in Crystal City. The event will feature seven “hydration stations” inside the Crystal City Shops. More than 45 wines will be available each day, and participants receive 20 tasting tickets, a tasting glass and a racing bib. During the event, attendees can move from station to station, sampling an array of vino.
“It’s a fun thing to do on a weekend in February,” Barker said.
Barker credits the Crystal City Business Improvement District for making the Wine Walk a reality.
“This is an event I’ve wanted to do for years,” he said.
The Washington Wine Academy 1K Wine Walk takes place Saturday and Sunday. Saturday sold out its 1,000 tickets, but as of press time plenty of spots remained for Sunday. The walk starts at 2 p.m. each day with a different heat starting every half hour, finishing at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30. For more details, visit washingtonwineacademy.org
