Investigators are searching for evidence in an apparent fire-bombing that damaged the Havre de Grace public library early this morning.
Havre de Grace police responded to an automated security alarm call at the library at 120 S. Union Ave. at 3:15 a.m. andfound a front window broken and the building filled with smoke, spokesman Maj. John Van Gilder said.
“As we moved in, we determined it was extremely suspicious,” Van Gilder said.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Faron Taylor said it appeared as though someone threw an incendiary device through the window into the childrens’ section of the library, where flames damaged the carpet and some of the furniture. He could not elaborate on the type of device.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal, Maryland State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were combing the site earlier today for evidence. The building sustained about $5,000 in damage.
Firefighters from Susquehanna Hose Co. extinguished the flames within a few minutes. The flames and water did not spread to the books or the rest of the library, Taylor said.
