A tiny Dutch town took Twitter to court on Friday, seeking the removal of all messages relating to a string of unfounded pedophilia conspiracy theories.
Conspiracy theorists posted several stories on the social media platform beginning in 2020, stating that Satan-worshiping pedophiles were abusing children in the 1980s in Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, a 35,000-person town in the Netherlands.

The town has denied these allegations. Despite this, people have flocked to Bodegraven’s cemetery to write messages and place flowers at the graves of most likely random children that may have been targets of the cult.
“If conspiracy theorists don’t remove their messages, then the platforms involved need to act,” Bodegraven lawyer Cees van de Zanden said, per Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant on Friday.
The town made a similar request last year, asking the men who started the rumors to remove all online content, including tweets and threads, but stories are continuing to circulate on social media. Now, the town is focused on the platform itself.
Van de Zanden said the town sent a request to Twitter in July about removing the content but has yet to receive a response.

The conspiracy theorists are in jail for other convictions, such as incitement and death threats to public officials, according to Reuters.
